Finally pulled it out of the corner. Had it for sale ( b2b-offroad.freeforums.net/thread/1055/smoker-project-550) for a while until I had time to tinker. I didn't advertise too hard, I wanted to build it, just didn't think I was going to be able to make time. Gotta throw this thing together and get it out of the shop to make room for a tubing bender...
- Tank 57" long x 24" diameter x .25" thick (100 gallons)
- Fire box 25" deep x 18" wide x18" tall x .25" thick with door and dampers
- Trailer 10' x 40" approx
It'll be nice for family gatherings and such... It's a small tank, 24" by 48" and 1/4" thick, should be quick warm up and hold heat well. I cut the fire box off my other smoker and extended it 6" so it'll hold a normal length fire wood. I'll cut tank and insert the box about 8" into the tank and mount it on a Jet Ski trailer. I'll base it off of a reverse flow stick burner design. Should be perfect for short cooks like ribs and chicken. I just don't have the patience for cooking butts and turkeys and such, they take too long. It'll be somewhat similar to the lang smoker( langbbqsmokers.com/lang48/lang48_original.html). Won't be quiet as pretty, but it'll be a fraction of the price. Mocked up...

That tank was made in 1953 !! You need to check it and make sure its not monele , if it is it could be worth several hundred dollars scrap value. If so scrap it and ill get you another big steel tank

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I asked a buddy of mine that use to manage a scrap yard and he got an instant woody. I'll look into it.

A magnet stuck to it pretty well. I'd bet it normal steel. The scrap guy said he'd swing through and test it tomorrow. Monele brings around $6/lb. At 200lbs, that'd buy a nice tubing bender and a few dies. So it's worth a check.

I went ahead and notched the tank and mocked the firebox up to it. What da hell, I'm only out some time if it's monele. The scrap yard doesn't care if it's cut up or not. And now I got a sample for them to test without having to haul the whole tank around.

I knew there was something about the magnetic properties of it but wasn't sure what. Most people have never heard of monel and never knew they made tanks with it. I know they made quite a few of them back then out of monel. We have sold a few of them and I do know they bring GOOD money. I know where a couple are in some customers attics that said I could have them, I need to get them and sell them myself. I have a 75 gal electric tank right now that your welcome to if you find out that one is monel. Good luck, hope it turns out to be worth something.

No Dice... Ended up being 98% mild steel. No time lost, he was nice enough to swing by my work on the way to another site. I had some hope though, b/c I knew were a few more of those tanks were. Looks like I'll be cutting and grinding some more tonight.

Well it was worth checking, didnt mean to slow you down No doubt, It was worth a shot. I'd been pissed if it was completed and then found out my smoker was worth more in scrap than assembled. Talk about a slap in the face Did more beer drinking than working last night ... I cut the door and got some measurements for the baffle, midplate, etc.... I should have set the fire box about 4" lower and the main door about 2" lower. It's all good tough, I got a work around. I wire brushed the inside, talk about a dust storm in the shop. I need something to make a good heavy tight hinge without slop. Anybody know any bolt/pipe combinations that have a tight tolerance to make a hinge out of? I'd say the door is 30-40lbs...

UGH... I have this overwhelming urge to weld it together!!! I like the planning & plasma cutting, but welding is definitely the best part! With grinding being the worst...
