Put a timing light on it and check the timing. If the distributer is installed 180 out it will run ok but can cause it to run hot. I figured that out the hard way after running my truck for a few months that way when I was 17.

It ran good just ran hot drove it that way for almost a year. A small block Chevy is tough. Lol

For the blow-by you should check the PCV or whatever system that old thing has, I have seen that cause an engine to blow the dipstick out and make a nice mess.

BTW.. don't be a dumbass and leave painters tape on chrome for weeks at a time... I did it on my '49 also, I got busy hunting and other crap and forgot, it will come off pretty easy with a little rubbing alcohol tho. As for my opinion on the door handles ..... Well you already know
