I'd say over all, it was a pretty easy swap. If I spent the same amount of time wrenching as I did doing 12 ounce curls, it would have went a lot faster. But what fun would that be?
I'm no mechanic, I'm barely qualified to sweep the shop floor and clean the toilets. I searched the net and found tons of stuff on 4.0L, but nothing really on 3.8's. So I thought I'd post a few tips that I couldn't find on the net.
Keys to remember...(If you pull the engine separate from the tranny) * Take lots of before and during pics. Every angle with lots of light. * Go ahead release the freon. There no way around pulling the engine without disconnecting the AC lines. * Go ahead and pull the front grill/fan/ and inner fenders. They're way too easy to remove to not do it. * Zip tie the power steering pump to the air filter area, no point disconnecting those lines. * Remove and place all accessories(alternator,starter,A/C, etc) while in the Jeep. Everything is really easy to get to. * Remove the lower and upper intake while in the Jeep. This will need to be done to get to the upper transmission bolts and the EGR Valve on back of the head. Put the EGR valve back on before you put the intake back on.
The biggest PITA, is the top 4 tranny bolts. Every wire, dipstick, cable known to man is back there and it's tight. For some reason, 3 of the 4 tranny bolts have a mount on them. You'll have to pull the intake to get to those bolts. A flex head 18mm ratchet wrench will be your friend. Due to the way the motor mounts are made it was a little harder than the normal engine to line the dowel pins back up with the tranny. Tell friends you'll have free beer so you can have an extra hand. Be sure to get started before they get too drunk...
If I had to redo it, here's the approx time. Double it if I'm sipping on cold ones... 5 hrs to pull 1-2 hrs to swap parts over between the long block. 6 hrs to put back in.

How is that Surefire engine doing from autozone, my 2007 3.8 jk went out 3 wks ago, same symptoms as yours and I'm about to order a long block. i managed to save $3,000 and auto zone seems like the cheapest route, but I'm seeing many bad reviews, please help.

Are the 3.8's really that shitty?? Geesh!! Yes they are. I test drove an 11 Rubicon and it was a slug at best. I really wanted to like it just for it being a Rubicon but it was terrible.
