See, if I had done that I'd have to drop the pan to satisfy my curiosity! Glad it came out so easy. Yeah, I got to swap the pan over to the new engine anyway... I'll definitely take a glance. I'm going to say I lied about it being easier than the TJ. It really wasn't bad until I got to the back tranny bolts. I spit and cussed over them. I finally went and borrowed a flex head ratchet wrench. Other than being damn near impossible to get to, those dudes got some torque on them. Everything on the top side was came apart really well. I'm really impressed with Jeep's engineering on this... I'm sure there's better ways, here's the way I went about it: *Disconnect the battery. duh *Took the grill off and bottom valence off drained the radiator. Pulled the fan shroud, and hoses. *Pulled the accessories, and air box. Zip tied the power steering box to the fender well. Had to disconnect the A/C lines, killed a few innocent animals and extended the already large gap in the ozone. *Disconnect the fuel line, majority of the electrical connectors, pulled the upper intake, pulled the lower intake. *Lifted it up, pulled the inner fenders, disconnected the exhaust at the collectors. *Removed the starter. Removed the heat shields above the collectors. Removed the flex plate dust shield, removed the flex plate bolts. *Removed the lower 4 tranny bolts. The bottom two are easy, mid two were a bitch, the one on the passenger side and I bonded... She has a special name. *Loosen the motor mount bolts, the way it's designed, they don't come out. *Lowered the Jeep, parted the sea of wires so I could see the top two tranny bolts. 18MM Flex ratchet wrench is your friend. I now have a 16 piece metric set.(I'm a tool whore) *Hook the cherry picker up and pull her out. My buddy did it in 3 hrs(which is an awesome mechanic), I did it in 8... yeah, I took my time labeled everything, over analyzed everything. I'd stare at it a while, turn a wrench, drink a beer, stare it a while, repeat... I think 4-5 hrs is a reasonable time.

I checked our Jeep place, he told me $4,400 with a 3 yr,36K mile warranty. A buddy that's a mechanic said he could get it around $3,600 from the dealership. They're running $2,500 at the salvage yards. I can get a Jasper engine for $2,500 (3 year,100K) and from Autozone for $1,986 (3 year, 100K) I'm going to read into Autozone's warranty, if the warranty includes labor, I'll go that route. If not, I'll go the Jasper route. Thx for looking into it though, I did freak when I first saw the $4,400 price tag.

And I was bitching about the $900ish I have in my 4.0L swap! I bitched about spending $1000 swapping the engine on Big Bird... The last engine I swapped before it cost about $500, it was a 302 in a 90' model mustang. Picked it out of a pile of engines in a barn at the salvage yard. It was literally a pile of engines, this one was upside down. They used a tractor to push the other engines off of it. I abused the hell out of it and had the best luck out of it.
It just keeps doubling... geesh

I'd tried to look into prices from them once and I kept getting referred to their official installers for price, etc. Was kind of frustrating...

I don't personally, my local mechanic said he would order one for me if I decided to go that route.

I ordered a Surefire engine from Auto-Zone yesterday. Their warranty will cover partial labor, plus it's about $500 cheaper than the others. From what I've read, apparently all mass produced reman-engines got their share of shotty reviews. If time & money wasn't a constraint, I'd have a friend at a local engine shop rebuild it. I've shared a shop with the Auto-Zone manager for the past 7 years and he's a stand up guy. At least I have the comfort of knowing, he'd do what he can to get any possible issues resolved.
It should be here Monday. If I'm not too worn down from the run, I'll swap mounts/pan/timing chain cover over Monday night and start sliding it back in Tuesday night.
