Tomorrow if the weather is good I will start to replace the head on my Cherokee. I have read several posts on jeepforum and I've watched a few YouTube videos on how to go through the swap. Is their anyone that has gone through this have any tips? I have heard the head bolt by the firewall can be a pain.

Just make sure to clean the deck on the block good, use a good head gasket, clean the head bolt threads in the block so when you torque the bolts down (some say new head bolts, others don't, I reused mine in my build) you get good even torque throughout. Just take your time and do it right. Take pics of everything before hand so that way you have them to reference back to if things get questionable when you're putting it back together.

Thanks David, I appreciate that info. Yeah with this being my first time with something major I will be sure to take my time. If anyone is free Tomo and wants to stop by to throw wrenches at me. Feel free to lol

Only thing I can contribute is this, if your pulling TE exhaust from theanifols expect to ruin the factory captured nuts on the manifold. I've pulled exhaust 4 times and ruined 3 of the 4 taking it apart.
As stated clean all mating surfaces GOOD, as in eat off of clean. If you have access to a tap and die set run a clean out tap in the holes where the head bolts go. Corrosion and electrolysis and skew torque readings. While the head is off use a softer bristle wire brush to clean the combustion chambers. I always do this and never had an issue.
Question are the head bolts torque to yield or not? If so replace them. TTY stretches the bolt and reusing them can break them.

4.0 specs say you can use the head bolts 1 time past the original use. So if it hasn't been changed, you can reuse the bolts. Just be sure to dab some paint on tbe heads if you reuse them so the next person in will know they have been reused once. It's a pretty straight forward task, and good advice in the other post. I will warn you, that head is HEAVY when trying to line it ip to sit back down on the block. If you have a cherry picker, that will make the job easier when doing it alone.

I have the new head on and I'm getting ready to torque it down. When I took the old head off it had coolant in the cylinder 4 and 5 bore. Now just the task of putting it back together. Here's the question The pushrods were taken out without being put in order They all look ok but is it ok to reuse them ?

I wouldn't hesitate to reuse them, and I wouldn't worry any about mixing them up.

Yeah, no doubt it sucks to do, but it makes you feel alot better about it when you think about how much money you saved doing it yourself.
