So this has been happening for a while now. I'm running a Super Short SYE that replaces the speedometer gear in the NP231 with a tone ring. Last time I had the rear driveshaft off I checked the torque on the yoke nut and it is in spec. The rear yoke is designed to press the tone ring against the oil pump and spin with the output shaft on the case. If I pull the speed sensor out I can reach in and spin the tone ring by hand. This should not be able to happen. Anyone got any ideas on what to do to keep it from spinning on the output shaft? I've been thinking of find a shim that is the same diameter and putting it in and then putting the yoke to see if that works. It will only act up when I let off the gas and then reapply the gas.

If it's loose enough to let the tone ring spin freely do you think your getting proper lubrication to the case? A shim might take of it. Have you pulled the yoke and made sure the ring is not broken?

Yeah. Last summer when it was doing it I tore the t-case apart to see and it was fine. Just seems the yoke isn't putting enough pressure on the tone ring. The tone ring is really thick so it would take a lot for it to break.

Pic of the tone ring for reference

Prolly a machining difference between either the ring or the yoke that there's just enough clearence to make it loose. Start with one shim and see where it leads. Good luck.

I need to pull the yoke and find some shims that are the same size. Does Napa have shims?

Have you tried contacting who you bought the kit from?
Not trying to be a smartass !!

Have you tried contacting who you bought the kit from? Not trying to be a smartass !! Yeah. They sent a new yoke nut out and said to make sure it is torqued to specs. Found a few others with this issue and they couldn't get it fixed. They eventually bought the JB Conversions SS-SYE to fix the problem. I've got the Rugged Ridge which has been fine except for this.

Does the back of the tone ring have or need splines.?

No. It sits against the splined portion of the shaft that the oil pump is on.

Have you checked is this a Common problem with other owners of the same kit?

Have you checked is this a Common problem with other owners of the same kit? I've seen a few mentions of it online. None of them had a solution to it other than one guy replaced it with the JB Conversions and hasn't had problems since. It almost seems there isn't enough pressure on the tone ring against the splines it is supposed to rest against. I really don't want to spend $300 on a new SYE just to fix one issue.

Hey Weezul, I tracked this down for you. It's a more common problem than you think. The nut is bad about getting loose and making the ring loose as well. They recomend a new nut and a shim that's .075 thick and 1.54 ID and 2.25 OD and some thread locker. The article I read said the nylon lock nut supplied was only good for one time use. Hope this helps.

I've got a new nut for it that I can put on but will ask for another while I have them on the phone. www.wranglerforum.com/f282/rugged-ridge-mega-short-sye-retaining-nut-size-125234.htmlJust went to their site and created a support ticket. We'll see what they can do...
