Alright so a few of you know Im building up a d30 since Ill never go fullwidths or over 35s. Im buying up parts and its really down to gussets and sleeves or a truss. Here's where Im at. What would be the better way to go between the sleeves and truss? sleeves arent bad (100 bucks) but it seems the install would be a pain in the ass. A truss would do the same I guess for the pass side as far as strength but nothing really for the drivers. However it'd be custom made so cost would probably be more than 100 bucks. I dont beat on my rig that hard so Id imagine Id probably be okay on the drivers side but shit does happen and I only want to have to build one up once. So now as far as gussets. I prefer the ones that slide over the top and bottom of the knuckle vs. the ones you weld on the sides. It seems finding the ones that slide over the knuckle arent really made for a XJ 30 but are for a JK 30. At almost a hundy Id hate to spend it and them not work. On the other hand Im not really a fan of the side weld ons. Sure they'd keep the knuckle from closing in but what about the whole thing bending in.? I guess thats where the sleeves would come in, right.... Anyway Im just throwing it out there for opinions on the matter before I go forward on anything involving this.

The sleeves are really not that hard to install and i`d check with clyde on the gussets. He should be able to make what ever gussets you want.

We went with the sleeves, gussets and truss and if I had to pick just one I would have gone with the truss but I believe IRO includes the "C" sides gussets with their kit. That IRO truss relocates shocks and springs and really makes a big difference in how the front axle responds to obstacles.

The sleeves wont help you with the biggest problem on the d30 and thats bending the c's.. the problem with gussets tho is the driver side doesnt have enoigh room for one.. I would check out a truss from artec or ruff stuff..

ill probably just truss it in the end. sleeves would be nice though and still on my mind. i mean for a 100 bucks and some axle drilling/welding, you just increased the strength quite a bit. anyway ive checked it out and you probably couldnt fit one on either side with the side over gussets. it'd be optimal to do the side mounts and work a bottom bracket like teamjeep (or so i assume thats who it is) posted above. it would at least hold the C in place better with that brace down there along with the side gussets. id go for a slimmer fit and drag it out to the end of the C though ahhh pipe dreams

Any issues on that truss and clearance between it and the oil pan or radiator?

Any issues on that truss and clearance between it and the oil pan or radiator? Nope, you could completely drop out the oil pan and never touch the axle but this thing has 8.5 inches of lift.

ahhh pipe dreams No need with this suspension, the control arm drops below that lower gusset and is very close to the tire. I made it tall to transfer that bending stress at a steeper angle towards the axle tube...method to the madness. Now I agree it is not the coolest looking gusset but I made it using a cut off wheel on a Harbor Freight angle grinder...

I can dig that. How many holes did you have to drill for the sleeves? Any tricks to make it easier?

This is kewl thread ! Good info right here. I know all the hype is ton axles. But to make the dirty 30 live on a set of 36" tires is my goal! What size tire do you run jrocks and have you had any trouble from your 30 since you did all that too it?

4-6 each, staggered at 12-3-6 and 9 o'clock. The axle kinda dictates where the welds will go, it kinda makes sense once you get started. Plan to weld em up on the "C" end as well.

Maybe one day I'll do a fancy truss or some C-gusset things. But for now, my 30 is holding up ok with my 37's on it. And I've beat the shit outta my rig on every occasion possible.
