I thought I would do build thread on this XJ, I think it is going to be a kewl build. It is a little on the extreme side of keeping much of the XJ in tact, but this going to be on very tight budget! I believe this is the only way to keep the budget in check. I dont know why this Jeeps name is " Felicio Magnifico" but some how that is what we named it LOL long story actually Here is where we are on money spent right now. Part cost ------------------------------------------------------------------------ XJ was a gift 00.00 Dana 44 00.00 Hauled the truck off for person so gas and time only Dana 60 00.00 was in hauled off truck 4:10 gears 00.00 they was already in axles 37" tires 00.00 they are pretty worn but will do for first test runs doubler kit 500.00 extra 231 00.00 already had it from something dont remember where it came from Steel for trusses ect. 100.00 steel for cage and boat side ect. 500.00 racing seat 00.00 they come out of race cars I pulled apart over the years. Misc going to leave this blank for now but this is for gas, grinding wheels, shop supplies ect. total for now --------------------------------------------- 1100.00 here is some pics of what is done so far. off comes the roof ( real jeeps dont have tops and the rockers for boat sides We picking up the steel for the cage and boat sides hopefully Monday or Tuesday. I'am eager to keep this project rolling! I believe it is going to come out to be one heck of a nice crawler on a very tight budget. If anyone has any suggestions or input please give it to us. We are by no means at all experts and can use all the guidance we can get

What welder are you using?? Seems like it's not getting hot enough from all the extra slag on the welds..
The front upper link mounts need one side plated.. That's where it gets most of it's strength
Why a 4 link? It could have been done with a 3 link with the radius arms like that..
Tracbar?
You keeping the leafs in the rear? If not triangulated 4 link?
That front 60 has some beef... Don't think you'll have any issues beating on it other than the ball joints giving out.. It's a great build.. looks like loads of fun! Good luck!

Iam using a ESAB 250 mig welder. I will take a closer pic of the welds, I thought they looked pretty good, idk ? The tracbar bar hasnt been built yet. Waiting to get some more steel to plate the frame before we build it. And yeah we could have got away with a 3 link but, decided to put 2 upper links just for strength. And the front I thought was a dana 44 ? Am I wrong ? Also when you say side plated, I think I know what you all are talking about , but iam not real sure could you please clarify that so I can fix it. Thanks !

OH.. I guess it is a 44 isn't it.. I was thinking the 60 was for the front.. In that case.. take the passenger side knuckle off and have it drilled and tapped fro high steer.. mucho more strength and puts the tie rod up high for clearance! They sell kits with the bolts and cone washers... The plates I'm talking about on the mounts is just to box it in.. either in front or behind doesn;t matter.. instead of just 2 plates side by side... Like this..

So in the same post you tell him that he does not need the mount at all (3 link), then tell him he needs to add extra support to the bracket?

The upper mounts doing have a lot of pressure on them all the time.. but when they do it's enough to bend or break the mount if it's not squared up.. I've seen it done. Mostly on aftermarket tracbar mounts that aren't plated.. The 3 or 4 link doesn;t matter if the mount bends.. is 4 link stronger? Yes.. But not always necessary... a good 3 link will hold up fine without the extra link.. I should know.. Mine is a custom 3 link mounted on the passenger side and it's been through 15 foot front slams!! Where's that nasty video Ben??

We finally got some work done on the XJ. Building the boat sides takes a little more time than I thought. And welding to the original frame metal is a tough task. It is built out of that nasty galvanized stuff. We used 1/4" 2x6 tubing for the new rockers/sliders. Then for the boat sides themselves we used 1/4" steel plate. I think by doing it this way the frame will be reinforced plenty. All of our cage will just weld on top the 2x6. Plenty strong enough to hold the XJ together and hold the cage in check. of course the welder spit and carried on, on the weld that stares you in the face,LOL oh well a grinder will take care of it

I finished welding the passenger boat side up this eveing. Whew , glad that is over! That is a bunch of over head welding! And just to be honest I hate to weld over head especially for long periods of time.
