This happened with my old engine and just happened with my new engine. It will stay on if I hold the gas and runs smooth. Once warmed it will idle on its on but driving it causes it to die when I let off the gas.
I'm thinking IAC
Now for the confusion. The battery, which is new, seems weak. I have an evap leak code that has been on for ages. When I got it to idle on its on, I noticed the CEL was off. The code is gone. Also, it was blowing white smoke for about 2 minutes then stopped.
I read somewhere that if the battery had a bad cell, it won't let the alternator charge right and die. I'm taking the battery to have it tested and cleaning the IAC. The smoke did worry me though

I think you already may have figured it out.. Change batt.. then clean your IAC.. Mine did the same thing when I would stop at a stop sign..

the smoke sounds to me like it was loading up on too much fuel trying to compensate for something wrong elsewhere, I really don't know enough about all the electric crap on these vehicles now days to even make an educated guess as to why tho

Battery tested OK. I cleaned the IAC and it runs now. Back in business! It's amazing how many people don't know about the IAC and how easy it is to clean!

The IAC acted up again on a trail. My buddy who knows nothing about cars got scared and though we were stuck. It was hilarious. I think I gotta soak it in carb cleaner and see if that fixes it for good. It was only goofy for a few minutes and then ran fine again.

Might have to change it to a new one.. If it's sticking or it's not actuating cleaning it won;t help..
