We ran with Castrol 10/30 in the XJ since day one. Changed it every 3,000 miles. Mike ran a compression test on the XJ last winter when the mileage was about 135,000 and it still checked out at factory specs.
Switched to Mobile 1 full synthetic (the one for high mileage engines) two oil changes ago- that's when the XJ developed the oil leak. Consensus is that the detergents and additives in the Mobile 1 cleaned out what little crud was in the engine and thus exposed areas in the seal that oil was able to leak through. Thanks to Charlie, Mike, James, and a few others- we got the seal changed.
I'm sort of glad it started leaking like that- it exposed a weak area that needed to be addressed. Based on what I've read online, I'm not sure if it is completely safe for us to switch back to Castrol or any other fully conventional oil.
Several guys on the Cherokee forum stated they had similar experiences when they switched from a conventional oil to a synthetic oil on a high mileage engine; i.e.- their rig suddenly started leaking.

I don't see the point in High Mileage Oils.... use a good quality oil from day 1 and stick with it.

My opinion high mileage oils are for people who have alot of miles on their vehicle and change the oil when its convenient for them. I have never used the high mileage crap before in nothing. I have 160000 on my jeep and 250000 on my truck and neither one has had high mileage oil I've just changed it every 3000-3500 miles.
