Pulling the transmission on an '02 Sierra Z71. Doing all of this because the rear main is leaking like a sieve. This is one heavy hard to get out SOB. 3 hrs start till it was out. GG

Are you sure the rear main is leaking. I've done a bunch of oil leak work on 5.3s. It's usually coming from other places. The rear main is in the rear cover. Be careful lining up the rear cover when you put it back together. That part is a block off plate for an accesory oil line. Takes a separate gasket That cost about $3.

What are some other common leak points on the 5.3? Honestly the whole backside of the motor behind the bell housing is totally washed out and the owner said he was putting about a quart to quart and half a day in it.

If you'll notice, the oil filter screws to the pan. This means that the pan gasket actually has pressurized oil running through it. When it leaks, it leaks a lot and makes a mess. I'd bet on it before the rear main.

A quart to a quart and a half a day. Really. Pull that bitch out and buy a junk yard engine that you hope has had a little maintaince done to it. That engine ain't leaking a quart a day without a hole somewhere.

In the 10 minutes it took to get it situated on my rack I had an oil puddle the size of a plate on the floor.

I'd bet on it before the rear main. Did not know that. Somehow I have a feeling that'll I'll probably do the pan gasket as well just to be sure. Can it get any better??

Pan gasket for sure. it's easy, the factory gasket is riveted to the oil pan.
