Are you trying to patch rust? (Fender or quarter panel?) If so, find an old hood. There big enough and from the right car usually flat enough to cut several pieces out to patch most anything. And most of the time cheap or free. I've done this before in the past to make a patch and it worked out great. This way you have the same type of metal (thickness and strength) as original.

I have trunk pans for the trunk.. but they don't go all the way to the back where the rust is the worst.. So I'm wanting to make a long panel to replace it with... Also it's hard to find the right battery tray for this since the models changed every year back then.. so I'm gonna make my own..
Not a bad idea tho! Get some old car in the junkyard and pull the metal from it..
