When I purchased my YJ it came with the wonderful D35. As this was my first experience with building my own Jeep I took the advice of so many others when they said to do the 8.8 swap. I was also told to weld the tubes to the chunk "just in case". I ended up with an 8.8 with a limited slip 3.73 gearing. When I installed it I did the spring over axle modification at the same time. I eventually did the correct anti-wrap bar and came across a Detroit (mini spool of sorts) rear locker just a few months ago. I was having issues with bending the leafs on this thing, which the anti-wrap bar ended up fixing.......so I thought. Then I took it out and bent the rear passenger leaf again, couldn't figure out how that happened. I took it back to Cusom Springs and had it re-re-arched. When I got the leaf back it was kind of difficult to reinstall but I finally got it back on.
Time warp to New Years Weekend...................
First trail, 30 minutes or less into the ride and .....................BAM!!!!! Sounds like a piece of steel actually breaking in half. We get to a stopping point, I look, I see the rear pass leaf is bent. Now we were on Jester, a simple....simple.....simple trail. Me and Greg get to investigating how this could've happened and find that the stitch welds I put on the axle tubes to the chunk had been sheered. Yep, I twisted the chunk backwards about 3/4-1".
Time warp to Weezies text msg (as was recieved).....
Weezie... Do you have an e-brake
Me... Yes
Weezie... I read that some have twisted the pumpkin by trying to take off with the e-brake on...so I wonder if putting on the e-brake and trying to drive in reverse would rotate it back down.....
Me... Hmmm
Time warp to the fix.....
Got up New Years Day, looked at Rook, told him what I was gonna try and he continued to make breakfast. I smashed the e-brake lever down to the floor (YJ's don't have a handle on the tranny hump...they be old school with a foot lever) put that dude in reverse, popped the clutch and HOLY SHIT IT WORKED!!!! I actually got the chunk rotated back around to where the broken welds lined up.
Time warp to the moral of the story......
IF YOU HAVEN'T WELDED THE AXLE TUBES TO THE CHUNK YET.....YOU NEED TO DO IT.
