Getting it to stop better will be my first project. Right now, it has a stock
booster, master cylinder, and proportioning valve hooked up to the 4 wheel disc
brake setup on the axles. It will stop ok on the highway, but on the trails in
4lo it leaves alot to be desired...tries to walk through the brakes. I also have
a very mushy pedal that goes over half way to the floor before it even thinks
about stopping. After MUCH reading, browsing build threads, and searching I've
got a direction I want to head. I'm going to be replacing the master cylinder
with either an E350 or corvetter master cylinder. Both will bolt up with just
minor modifications and both are set up to be able to handle 4 wheel disc
brakes...I'm leaning towards the vette cylinder. I am also going to be removing
the stock proportioning valve and putting in an adjustable one so I can tune how
much braking power goes to my rear wheels. The stock prop valve is set up for
drum brakes and just won't cut it for discs. On the TJ and XJ prop valves, you
can remove an o-ring in them and most people have good luck with that...on the
YJ ones, it's a little more involved and you end up having to weld up a hole in
them. That's why I'm looking at just buying and adj. one and being done with it.
I'm also looking at installing a couple of line locks for the front and rear
brakes since I don't have an emergency brake. The stock pedal is almost useless
with my cage, and there isn't any way to put an e-brake on my rear axle, so it's
either this or a driveline brake....which is what I really want but due to funds
will have to wait. I'm wanting to build a panel in the cab that will have the
line locks and adjustable prop valve in it and I'm looking into getting a set of
pressure gauges for the brake lines so I can keep up with any issues I might
have with the system. Running the manual line locks, it's all about
pressure....with the gauges, I can monitor the pressure and find out early if I
have any bleed by issues and am in danger of loosing brakes.

Started my master cylinder swap today. Bolting on an E350 one to get better
brakes! It has a larger bore and stroke to work better with my Dana
60's and 4 wheel disc brakes and will bolt up to the YJ with minor
mods.
Here is my stock YJ master cylinder:
And
here is the Ford one:
To
bolt it up all I had to do was egg out the bolt holes a little since the YJ
bolts are closer together than the ford ones and grind off the edges of the
flanges:
The
brake line fittings are different also so after spending a little time with the
guys at the local parts house we had some new lines built:
We
couldn't find one fitting so I had to reuse the old one for the prop. valve
side... Gonna get it all bolted up and bent in the morning and bled and see if
this really gives me the kung fu brakes I keep reading about!

I have Brakes! I had to pull the MC off a couple of times and adjust the pushrod
going into it and I think I'm gonna bleed the brakes after running around a bit
but it's 10X better than it was! :pickle: Next up is replacing the prop. valve
with an adjustable one so I can get better braking in the rear.
