Lance Corporal Tim Creager of Millington Tennessee was both the image of bravery and the spirit of freedom. Having received a full-tuition scholarship to The Citadel, Creager had felt a call to enlist and graduated from Marine Basic Training in August 2003. Having excelled in basic training, he was selected for Light Armored Vehicle School, where he was trained as a driver. After completing his training, LCPL Creager was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance BN at Camp LeJeune, NC.
Shortly before his death, Tim earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a Combat Distinguishing Device for valor. This rare honor is given only to those who demonstrate exceptional leadership in combat situations. LCPL Creager was cited for actions from April 10 to June 24, 2004. Overall, his efforts led to the rescue of his platoon in an ambush situation, the capture of nine detainees, an improvised explosive device lab and large weapons stashes.
On July 1, 2004 an improvised explosive device in the median near Abu Gharib hit LCPL Creager’s vehicle while on patrol, and he was trapped inside. At the age of 21, LCPL Creager gave his all for the freedom of others. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action in Iraq resulting in his death. His mother, Kay, received the awards for her only child in the months following LCPL Creager’s death.
Running on our second year, the University of Memphis NROTC program is hosting a memorial run in which all proceeds are directed towards the Semper Fidelis Society as well as the Wounded Warrior Regiment. The United States Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment provides and facilitates assistance to wounded, ill and injured Marines, and sailors attached to or in direct support of Marine units and their family members in order to assist them as they return to duty or transition to civilian life.
