So I guess most of you know by now I've sold my RZR's so now I'm back to sitting around with nothing to do...that just won't do. I had thought about trading my XDM for an AR15 but when I got to shopping around for what EDC I would try next I kept going back to the XDM so I decided not to trade and just build my own AR. This won't be my first gun build....some of you might remember the custom 10/22 I built for my son a couple years ago...but this will be my first experience with the AR platform. The more I read, the more excited I get, these things are like leggo blocks! I know there are more than a few of you that have built your own so I hope you will help guide me in the right direction now that I'm ready.
First up is going to be a stripped lower and lower parts kit. I was shopping around online for a lower but found out my lgs orders and sells them. I'm waiting to hear from him on brand/price but is there anywhere else semi-local you would suggest to look? Anything online you would suggest or stay away from and just have it shipped to my lgs? Since it will be a rifle it won't be an issue to cross state lines to pick it up.
What is the difference in materials? Metal or polymer I guess...lol
Prices vary a lot on these, is it just a name brand thing or is one really better than the other?
What else do I need to know before picking a lower?
I plan on doing this a piece at a time so I don't mind spending money where it's needed but I don't want to throw money away either and end up with 4k in an AR build that's really only worth a third of that if you know what I mean.
I was ordering a few things from MidwayUSA so I decided to go ahead and throw the lower parts kit in the cart. After a little reading, it seems all lpk's are the same until you get into 2 stage triggers. I ended up getting the Del-Ton lower kit. I'm reading up on how to do a trigger job and plan on doing one myself. Worst case I end up having to order another trigger, no big deal.
I also ordered a combo wrench to put a buttstock on with. I know I will need a barrel wrench when that time comes...what other tools will I be looking at? Anything else I need to know before getting too deep in this?
