Well sold my big Red Dodge 2500 yesterday, got a decent price. Also got a letter from chrysler saying my Jeep is fixing to get built! Woohoo
I'm rich at the moment, but after a few minutes on Excel, I'm poor again. Inorder to knock down the payments I've got to put a shitton down or I'll be broke. Now onto the question. I have read winch reviews till my head hurts. Y'all wheel around hear, and have a better idea on what I will be needing:
Can anyone recommend a winch for a Noob? I want synthetic line, and I'm getting the X package so it will have the 10A bumpers on it, which some say is another animal all together.
I've looked at Warn, Superwinch, and Quadratec. Quadratec is definitely more in my budget, but I don't want to just throw some crap on there to look cool. If I get stuck out by myself, I want to be able to get home.
I'd like to support the vendors that support the club too. Kiniving question but the 4wp discount? Can I use that and get it shipped to my mommas house in MS so I don't have to pay TN any sales tax? I'm cheap...

I am a huge warn advocate just cause I had my M8000 for many years and never had a single issue other than battery draw.. (fixed with bigger alternator) Others have said that smittybilt has a great warranty.. but i say that doesnt help when your in the woods and the only lifeline is that winch..
You get what you pay for.. this is one of those times.. ;-)

The majority of people are running either the Warn winches or the Rough Country winches. Bobbie has a RC 8000lb steel line winch on her LJ and has had no issues with it. I know Ryan at Rough Country will treat you real good if you decide to go that route.
I went the way less expensive route and put a Tuff Stuff 9500lb winch on the YJ. It was $300.00 with free shipping on eBay. I've had zero issues out of it, it's been on for over a year, and has been used plenty of times to get me unstuck (yes, even when i was going downhill......long funny story)
So, I have no issues with my Tuff Stuff winch. Plenty of folks are running a Warn as long as you (you in general, not personally) can afford one. RC winches are good stuff with a great warranty and excellent customer service. I can't give you an opinion on the Smittybuilt.

Cool, thanks for the quick replies. I had not even looked at the Rough Country winches. I thought I was gonna go the warn route, till I realized I'm a broke ass fireman. Caviar dreams, canned tuna diet.

When comparing winches look at the line speed. I had a china winch that worked fine and only cost $300 but it was painfully slow. Now I have a warn zeon 8 that was $700 but is much faster. I think most of the cheap winches are made by the same company. Viper, Smitty built, RC and so on all look alike.

It now lives on the front of my JK and still pulls just as new. It was at the outer limits of what I could afford when I bought it, but has been worth every penny and then some.

I've been very happy with my SuperWinch. Has worked every time. I've used the Rough Country and the Badlands (harbor freight) winches and both of those have left me in back spots when they malfunctioned. With that said, Rough Country service can't be beat, and being so close to us, warranty replacements are quick and hassle free (much more so than most other companies). The Rough Country winch was out of the earlier batches of production, and the replacement was waiting on on steps when we got back from the wheeling trip. The replacement has worked very well without any problems (on MJL's XJ).

I love my Warn 9000 winch. I found it used for $400 and haven't had an issue from it. Before I found that and was looking at new winches, the Superwinch 9500 with synthetic line was going to be my choice.

I have Warns on all my stuff. That is the only brand I have ever used. I have an XD900i on the Jeep and. M12,000 on the Dmax. You can't go wrong with a Warn. If budget is tight then buy a used one. Why are you sold on the synthetic line? I personally love steel cables, but always like to hear others opinions as to why they like synthetic.

Not much experience with winches, but my warn M8000 has been used several times for others and myself. No complaints what so ever. I've used synthetic line and wire, I definitely like the synthetic line for pure convenience. Not sure what other advantages there is to the synthetic line.
One thing for sure, I've seen 2 expensive winches fail due to poor installation(grounding) and wrong parts(controller). Being stuck in a awkward situation on the trails is bad enough, be damn sure to take your time and install it correctly and test it while you have the time and tools...lol

I'm old school and like the wire line myself.. I've ran a few synthetics for other people and always worried about getting the line in the rocks and such... Wire just works...
